We believe that sea kayaking is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, but before you head out on your own it is essential you have basic paddling skills to ensure the paddling is safe, fun and injury free.

Roaring 40°s Kayaking offers Tasmania’s most comprehensive kayaking instructional program. These lessons are for you if you are new to kayaking, looking to increase your paddling skills or you want to perfect that eskimo roll.

Our instructors are qualified sea kayak and white water instructors with Australian Canoeing, the peak body for kayak education in Australia. Our owner Reg works with TasTAFE training Tasmanian sea kayaking guides and has had over 10 years experience teaching the skills of kayaking in a safe and fun environment.

Pool Rescue and Introduction to Kayaking sessions

Our most popular sessions!

Our pool rescue session is conducted once a month on a Friday night in the comfort of the Kingston Indoor Swimming Pool. In this session we teach the techniques to be proficient at deep-water kayak wet exits (ie. we simulate falling out of your kayaking in deep water) and being able to then rescue yourself and others. 

Our Introduction to Kayaking session is held the following Saturday morning. This session provides the knowledge and skills for safe and enjoyable kayaking. Topics covered includes correct posture, kayak adjustment, essential safelty equipment, launching and landing, forward, reverse, turning and bracing strokes. Note: It is a prerequisite of this course that you have completed a Rescue Pool session.

Kayak Skills Sessions

Take your kayaking to the next level and imporve your skills and confidnece in challenging conditions with thei full day of intermediate skills training. Topics covered include body rotation to develop a powerful and efficient paddle stroke, edging to maintain kayak control in adverse conditions, balance recovery techniques (or braces), wet exit and self-rescue techniques. 

Eskimo Rolling

The Eskimo roll is the ultimate kayaking skill and will greatly imporve your confidence in challenging conditions .... and it is a fun skill to have! We operate this course on demand with a minimum of 3 people. Contact us to register your interest.

Kayaking Skills Weekend

Looking for a fun weekend of kayaking while improving your kayaking skills? Then this is the course for you. You will also learn the tips & tricks used by guides on Tasmania's premier kayak expeditions and develop the know how to plan trips yourself. Learn "on the water" from Tassie's best.
